The future of construction management jobs will look quite different than today. Advancements in construction technology and sustainable building are increasing the range of career opportunities – but these new jobs will require a new set of skills and knowledge.

With October being Careers in Construction Month, it’s an ideal time to look at the full scope of new construction jobs available.

Let’s take a closer look at the different types of construction jobs that are most likely to inspire the next generation of professionals seeking challenging work that pays well.

Technology careers

Technology-driven careers are reshaping the way projects are conceived and executed from conception to completion. Careers include:

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) managers oversee the integration of 3D models that foster collaboration between architects, engineers and contractors.
  • Drone pilots and robotics engineers employ that tech to enhance quality, efficiency, and safety on the job site.
  • Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technicians and designers create immersive experiences that facilitate on-site training, design visualization and project planning.

Green construction careers

More construction companies are focusing on sustainability and environmental responsibility both to meet regulatory requirements and as part of their own core values. Green construction careers include:

  • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification specialists ensure construction projects meet LEED standards, focusing on energy efficiency, water conservation and sustainable materials.
  • Sustainable design architects specialize in sustainable design and integrate eco-friendly features into building plans.
  • Energy auditors assess buildings to identify energy inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Green building materials specialists and project managers research, source and recommend environmentally friendly construction materials and practices, and then oversee projects from start to finish on budget are all in high demand.

Data and analytics careers

Data-driven careers in construction are on the rise as the industry embraces analytics to manage operations and logistics, increase efficiency and enhance safety. These jobs, which require a working knowledge of both construction and very technical computer engineer skills, are some of the hardest for companies to fill. Careers include:

  • Data analysts process information from multiple sources, harnessing data-driven insights to optimize construction processes and decision-making.
  • Machine learning engineers develop algorithms that predict equipment maintenance needs, optimize construction schedules and enhance safety through predictive analytics.
  • Digital construction managers ensure the implementation and secure connectivity for construction equipment and tools, enabling remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.

In conclusion

The careers highlighted embody the construction sector's dedication to innovation, efficiency and sustainability, shaping a future where construction is cutting edge, safer, more efficient and environmentally conscious. Sharing these careers opportunities with Gen Z will be essential to create a pipeline of skilled workers for these highly technical jobs.
